Björnlunda kyrka stands prominently on a hill above Kyrksjön in Björnlunda, its churchyard sloping steeply and picturesquely down towards the water. This is one of the older parish churches in Södermanland, with roots reaching back to the medieval period.

The nave is the oldest part of the church, dating from the 12th century. During the 1300s it was extended, when the sacristy was also added, and in the following century a grey stone tower was built. Between 1763 and 1766 the church was further enlarged with a north transept, giving the building the cross-shaped plan visitors see today. At the front of the church stands the memorial to Count Curt von Stedingk.

Among the church's notable furnishings is a large triumphal crucifix from the 13th century, mounted on the south wall. An even older treasure is a small processional crucifix from Limoges in France, said to have been brought to the church as early as the 12th century. The altarpiece is a copy, made in 1913, of Louis Masreliez's original painting for Maria Magdalena church in Stockholm. The pulpit dates from 1804 and retains its original decorative paintwork, while an hourglass made in 1736 can be seen on the altar rail.

The church's organ has a layered history: an instrument built in 1830 by Pehr Zacharias Strand was later rebuilt, and a new organ followed in 1912, before the current mechanical organ was built in 1980, incorporating the facade and some pipework from the 1830 instrument.

Behind the church stands a separate bell tower, thought to date from 1656, housing two bells cast in 1728 and 1774.
