The chapel was consecrated in 2006, replacing an earlier gravkapell of 1894 in Skara that had been judged inadequate for continued use. It was designed by the architect Ingvar Blixt of Ritningen Arkitektbyrå AB, and built using limewashed limestone and timber, giving the interior a light, calm character suited to quiet reflection.
Because the building is intended for use by mourners of any faith or none, its devotional room was deliberately left free of permanent religious imagery or symbols, allowing it to be adapted for different traditions and for non-religious ceremonies.
Outside the chapel stands a freestanding bell tower, a common feature at Swedish burial chapels of this kind, while the surrounding grounds include memorial groves (minneslundar) where ashes may be interred.
